Busy writing day today, but quickly I wanted to share a list of things I am digging.
First, Paul W. in Australia created this cover for men who want to read my book on the bus without underpants. (Without the underpants on the cover, I mean. Not personally sans pants.)
(click to embiggen)
Seriously, is this not THE AWESOME?
* * *
I am currently also digging:
Jess Riley's Driving Sideways. I read it last fall in order to give a cover quote, but I'm re-reading it now and still can't get over how good it is.
* * *
And speaking of sparkly sandals, these jelly shoes (I know!) have captured my heart.
(They're way more shiny in real life.)
* * *
I'm always excited when a grocery store-type brand comes out with something salon-quality.
My current manicure (in Orange You Cute?) went on more smoothly and has outlasted anything I've used previously by Essie and OPI.
* * *
Sloane Crosley, author of I Was Told There'd Be Cake.
Yes, I've already explained how much I liked her book. But I didn't know how charming she was until I watched her listen politely when my husband trapped her for twenty minutes, sharing his suspicions of a pending zombie war. The best part? When he asked if she were a member of the NRA, she sweetly replied, "Oh, no. We're Jews."
* * *
What I'm not digging:
Having fans drive in from all over the Midwest and then not be able to get into our session due to space constraints. (You guys who couldn't get in - I'm so sorry! We were led to believe there was a contingency plan in place.)
* * *
The Biblical weather causing me to go 0/15 in terms of my hair looking good at events.
* * *
Deadlines, I'm really not digging them. But I've got to honor them.
* * *
So, what are you digging?

I'm not digging that Mercury is in retrograde right now, but I'm justifying my writer's block by reading about it in Alice Flaherty's "The Midnight Disease," a neurologist's look at the drive to write, writer's block and hypergraphia. Plus, it offers temporal lobe epilepsy as a differential diagnosis for bipolar disorder--how much better does it get than that!
Recently jilted (you can read about it if you look me up on the blog pimping post), I am digging MillionaireMatch.com. Or at least I was until I read Evan Marc Katz's blog post "Why Men Don't Write to Curvy Women on the Internet." Maybe pie IS the answer...

I just dug into a huge bowl of Edy's Loaded Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup ice cream, replete with Hershey's hot fudge on it, because one can never have too much chocolate.
Serious amounts of yum.

Things I'm diggin:
~Philosophy 'Breakfast in Bed' trio of bath goodies I picked up at Sephora last Friday ...can you say YUM?
~Victoria's Secret Beauty Rush lip glosses ....If I can't do the knickers justice I can wear their lip gloss with pride, dammit!
~The gorgeous view from my spacious corner cubicle, complete with 4 panes of floor to glass windows overlooking downtown T.O, and the fact that today, the 'bongo's guy' is not drumming is heart out on the corner (idiot, I can hear him all the way up here on the 9th floor!)
~Beringer Vineyards White Zinfandel....a mild, girly wine that you don't totally need to be ashamed to be seen drinking!
~The fact that today, I KNOW full well that I am a better woman that an un-named Toronto Argo's cheerleader, who while attending a PR class with a girlfriend of mine uttered the following statment: "I can't wait to read The Other Boulion Girl, you, know, the one about the soup family?"
Indeed!!! I am diggin' that!!

I'm digging that my son's shirt arrived at work today from Threadless (no, no, I'm not trying to advertise for them, but it did come from there.).
http://www.threadless.com/product/1214/Word
Being that I'm a geek and English major, I'm reveling in the fact that I can make him wear goofy things that suit my humor. Cause he's only 16 months old and has no say in anything he wears!

Digging:
- The Dog Whisperer: Seriously, all dog owners should watch this show. if not for the cute doggies, then for Cesar Milan and his adorable polo shirts and perfect teeth.
- The *CELTICS* being awesome, thus giving Bostonians (a.k.a. ME) yet another reason to drink during the week, scream obscenities, and celebrate another championship run.
Not Digging:
- Celtics/Lakers finals games ALL being on at 9pm on a work night
- Guys who have no phone skills and vie for my attention via constant texting and awkward facebook messages. Really? You're in your mid twenties! Please stop communicating via what is essentially the electronic version of passing notes in class.

I'm diggin' you, you sassy thang!
You are my sardonic soulmate and I, your Democratic doppelganger.
I stumbled upon you quite by accident while perusing the buy-one-get-one-half-off table at Borders and have since devoured all three of your books faster than a fat girl through a bag of Oreos. (OK, that's not true -- the Oreos were gone by chapter 6 of "Bitter". Then I switched to Nutter Butters...)
Thank God for Jennsylvania, or I'd be going through major withdrawals right about now.
Good luck writing today -- so far all I've written today is this comment and a VERY overdue rent check.

I am so not digging the Chicago weather. Hello, when will summer arrive? And by summer I mean high 80's, no clouds, me neck deep in a pool. I have my best friend's wedding in 3 weeks and her bach-ette on Saturday. I don't think I will have color for either events at this rate. I'm preg by the way, so tanning booth is out. fhosrdhsdkjhi Pffft.

I'm digging:
*Being unemployed, first time in 10 years I've had a summer off, can spend all day, every day, with my almost 9-year-old son
*My new Wii Fit. It's exercising without really knowing it. Already lost two pounds.
* The Discovery miniseries, When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions. Love anything space-related.
* Top Chef Chicago. Just got addicted to it, sad the finale is this week.
* The Next Food Network Star. Sad the cute guy got booted instead of Nipa, a whiny bitch.
* The Celtics are up 2-0 against the Lakers. Go Celts!
Posted by: Erin | June 09, 2008 at 12:39 PM
DIGGING:
* SUMMERTIME!!! (i thought this brutal chicago winter would NEVER end!!!)
* BYOB restaurants- I'm out and about constantly during the summer, and BYOB is helpful on a budget!
* Open toed shoes/sandals that flaunt my pedicured feet!
* Michael Kors- leg shine! SPARKLES!
* moisture in the air, finally bringing life to my naturally curly hair after a dry dry winter.

Digging:
A relaxing day yesterday - on a boat on the caribbean sea out to a beautiful island (Buck Island National Park) just off the coast of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands - great friends, good snorkeling, fanfreakingtastic water....doesn't get any better.
Not-Digging:
Today, still unemployed since November therefore, pressure washing all window screens (filthy from Sahara dust -how the hell does it cross the ocean to land at my house and gum up my screens?) and washing the windows.
I think I'd rather be at work....or better yet - back on the boat! ;0)
Also not digging that I can't get to any Lancaster event...I have demanded that my friends in MN get to the Rosedale event or else!

Digging my upcoming camping trip this weekend!
Not digging the bills I gotta pay before I go.
Posted by: marisa | June 09, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I'm digging Stawberries & Creme frappacinos by Starbucks.
I'm not digging the weather in Connecticut today.
Or the fact that its 100 degrees out and my little guy has a fever of 102. At 9 the "I'm sick" whine is gone and has been replaced with sarcasm.
I think it's safe to also say I won't be digging the dispensing of medicine after the doctor visit at 3.
Posted by: Beckie | June 09, 2008 at 12:17 PM
I'm digging Starbucks Strawberries & Creme frappacino.
I'm not digging the weather.
Or the fact that it's almost 100 degrees out and my son has a temperature of 102. At 9 he knows how to be more sarcastic than whiney when sick - I've created a cute but sick monster.
I'm pretty sure I can say in advance that I won't be digging the dispensing of the medicine after the doctor visit at 3.
Posted by: Beckie | June 09, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Okay, so, I have to say that I laughed myself silly through "Bright Lights, Big Ass". My husband actually found the book in the bookstore and said, "It just sounds like you, you should read it." I said, "Yeah, you just saw 'big ass' and thought of me."
Anyway, so, I was a sorority girl at an Indiana college (DePauw) and hubby and I lived in Rogers Park for three years, so, there are a LOT of similarities. Your comments about Target? SO true. You should try the Evanston Target, if you ever want to mix it up -- that way you can watch the Hasidim families too.
My BIGGEST question is -- why so Republican still? And, WHAT does a Chicago girl say about Obama, even if she is still Republican? I cannot search the archives, so, I do not know if you have given the "Jen" analysis previously. But, curious where you come out on the Obamanator.

I'm digging that I got to laze around my apartment yesterday, sleeping til 4:00 pm then making (Nutrisystem) pancakes and (meatless) sausage links with (real) maple syrup. Nom!
I'm not digging the sleepy haze I'm in today after all that relaxation. Definitely not digging the humidity either!
Posted by: Laura | June 09, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Hey, a fellow Chicagoan here delurking/unlurking(?) to tell you I was reading the absolutely fabulous Traveling Light about a sister helping her brother die from HIV/AIDS. Very heavy, but worth it, and I needed a break to catch my breath. I realized I hadn't read your second book and it was just what I needed. Many thanks.

As much as I dig finding new authors, I'm afraid Sloane Crosley is no Jen Lancaster. She's okay... but your humor is in a class by itself.
Other authors I dig:
Sarah Thyre
Hollis Gillespie
Laurie Notaro
Also, am I the only one who thinks that (based on his brief cameo in your video) Fletch resembles Oprah's trainer Bob Green?
One last thing I dig:
Starbucks Mint Mocha Java Chip Frappucino (or some reasonable facsimile).
Damn, son. It's good.

Ahhhh... let's see.
I'm NOT digging the fact that it's Monday and I'm back at the 9to5. I'd much rather be at the shore, on vacation, Neimans fondling Loubous, somewhere - anywhere - but where I am currently.
I am, however, digging that in 2 months, I'm back in Philly and I've started the countdown. Yeah, I know I know - lame, but I need something to get me through the weeks here in dreadfully hot Orlando. Also, the fact that the barista gave me extra shots this morning just because also helped cheer me up.
Posted by: Lys | June 09, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Hey Jen, try the Sally Hanson Nail Prisms. They make a rainbow on your toes! My kids think it is funny and I get many compliments....
Digging the nice weather
NOT digging the Humidity...like others before me said, to seasons now adays - COLD and HOT!

The new lip gloss I picked up yesterday at Sephora. I adore all products in the line, but the smell taste and lack of glitter flakes rocks my coconutty world.
Better than growned up Bonnie Belle Lip Smacker.

P.S. For the record I always got a new pair of jellys at easter time. Now I wonder how my feet handled them as I think they would kill me now. Let us know!

New reader here, a girl in my book club recommended BITNB to me and I spent every evening last week devouring it, am now loving Crosley's book.
Books aside, I'm also very much digging air conditioning and fresh cherries.

I'm digging the fact that my son is taking his morning nap.
Not digging the hassle of the morning dealing with the police after someone broke into our Jeep. A-holes. Or, to quote Fletch, "Ass-stain."
Posted by: Christine | June 09, 2008 at 10:49 AM
I'm digging your blog, always your blog. Oh, and the new season of Design Star. Oh, and the new season of "my life on the D list." Oh, and my morning donuts. I am REALLY diggin' those right now.

Not digging washing dishes for 6 hours straight at work this past Saturday. Not digging the 5 pounds I've gained... Not digging being so far away from all of my friends!

i'm digging SATC the movie, i know so is everyone else but, still. i saw it on saturday and loved it! i haven't cried like that at a movie in i can't remember when. i knew it was bad when my BF and i exited the theater and were standing under flourescent lights and he looked at me and said, 'whoa.' i had mascara all over my face!

I'm digging the fact that in July I'm going to be sitting on a beach for one week with my daughter and my boyfriend. Can't wait. My first official vaction since I started at this company 6 years ago.
I'm not digging the weather. As Jill before me said, it is 1000% humidity out there... I too live in New England... New England used to be known for all their seasons.... not anymore. Cold and Hot! Thats it!
Can't wait to see you in Boston! Jen, you rock!
Posted by: Tara | June 09, 2008 at 10:31 AM
I am digging the fact that in just 5 and a half more work days, I will be on summer vacation (teacher here).
Despite this wonderful news, I am NOT digging the fact that it is currently about 150 degrees with a humidity of 1000% in my classroom, and probably will be for the rest of the year. "The weather in New England is two things: winter and Fourth of July" - yeah, I GET IT. Thanks.
Oh, also digging that you're coming to Boston, Jen!!! Can't wait! If you're around an evening early, you should come to Taste of Shrewsbury Street here in Worcester on the 24th from 5-9!!! The street is full of great restaurants and they give out free samples of the best food in the city (and we have some great food) for four hours straight! Then my cousins and I will be migrating to the deck of one of our fave restaurants for many, many bottles of wine! You're officially invited!

Loving "I Was Told There'd Be Cake" and also "My Horizontal Life" and "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" by Chelsea Handler. Her story about wearing an M&M costume to a party in February is reason enough to buy her books, plus her father is crazy/hilarious!
