Your List of Five

I'm having some furniture delivered today and I realize I have no cash to tip the drivers.  Since I don't want to be all, "Hey, thanks for carrying those three couches and the massive dining room table; may I offer you a letter from prison to convey my gratitude?" I decide to swing by the bank.

The new place has a two car garage but presently one garage door opener and it lives in Fletch's car.  Since I'm too lazy to pull out, go back to the garage, shut the door, and then go out the gate, I figure walking will be easier, and also healthier.  (Fitness has been low on the list of priorities for the last month, but it's working its way back up again now that things are calmer.)

I grab my bag, throw on an extra shirt and a fleece and head to the ATM.  Yeah, it's cold out but I walk briskly.  I get to the bank and when I do, I realize I've never had the vantage point of being on foot before.  And what do I see?

An enormous Mexican bakery.  Seriously, huge.  And I can smell it from where I'm standing.  Before I even realize what I'm doing, my feet bring me directly to their door.  So I stop in... but ONLY to see if they have healthy, low-fat, high-fiber muffins.

They do not.

They do, however, have almond croissants, which rank on my top five list of food Kryptonite.

With heroic restraint, I buy one and just as I'm leaving the warm, sweetly fragrant store, an employee stops me with an entire slice of Boston cream pie.  The whipped cream is perfectly peaked and the chocolate layer looks thick and dark.  The crust is so flaky it leaves little buttery flakes on the doily.  "You want to try?  Is very good," she tells me.

Unfortunately, pie is also on the Kryptonite list.

And even though I'm on a health walk, it would have been rude to say no.

Pie guiltily consumed, croissant in hand, I decide to take the long way home.  My newly chosen path leads me right past a Cuban coffee shop where I find Kryptonite item number three - cafe con leche.  (Mexican bakery?  Cuban coffee shop?  Yeah, not living in Naperville, either.)

By the time I get to my house, I'm high on carbs, hopped up on caffeine, and shaky from all the sugar.  I'm decidedly less healthy than when I began my walk.  I'd say this was a monumental fail... were I not so content right now.

Anyway, busy for the rest of the day, so you guys should talk amongst yourselves about your own food Kryptonite.  (Feel free to post recipes, too!)

P.S.  My other two items are spaghetti carbonara and a filet topped with melting goat cheese and a balsamic reduction.

P.P.S.  My mouth is watering just TYPING those items.

P.P.P.S.  Yeah, salad for lunch today.  A big one.

Comments

1. Movie popcorn with butter and milk duds mixed in (sounds weird but is so, so good)

2. starbucks peppermint latte with lots of whipped cream

3. roasted duck with the skin all nice and crackling with gravy

4. brie baked with pecans and brown sugar on top

5. Thanksgiving leftover sandwich (brown bread, leftover stuffing, dark meat turkey, gravy and cranberry sauce--microwave for 3 minutes and devour)

1) Peanut butter cookie dough icecream with reese's syrup on top (I'm eating some right now... I can already feel my ass getting bigger, I had it for lunch too..)

2) Carne Asada fries with extra guac from Roberto's Taco shop in Vegas

3) Mango Haberero wings from BW3's

4) Birthday Cake remix ice cream from Coldstone (so what I like ice cream...)

5) Reese's Peanut Butter Cup cereal, in a huge tupperware container with skim milk

Just reading these posts is making me hum the song Food, Glorious Food from the show Oliver....

1. Bacon and cheese omelet with a side of very thin sliced, very well done Scrapple - and if you haven't tried it because you think what it's made of is disgusting... oh well, that just leaves more for all of us Scrapple lovers. And if you're not from PA or NJ, you may not even know what Scrapple is which is probably a good thing.

2. Toasted sesame bagel with fresh kippered salmon, regular belly lox (not Nova - boring), cucumbers, and muenster cheese (oh yeah, I'm Jewish, but you can see that bacon and scrapple top even Jew food).

3. Kasha and bow ties - back to Jew food - with fried onions

4. Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk Ice Cream

5. Hot corned beef on warm rye with a side of extra large onion rings...

I feel like going to the diner right now and it's almost midnight - thank goodness New Jersey is full of 24-hour diners!

Ahaha this:
Since I don't want to be all, "Hey, thanks for carrying those three couches and the massive dining room table; may I offer you a letter from prison to convey my gratitude?"
made me CRACK up. I sit in newspaper in school every day and check this to see if there's a new post, and then end up sitting there laughing, getting funny looks from classmates :)
My food kryptonite - Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream and chocolate chip banana bread. And funnel cake.

1. Twizzlers (I can eat the whole pound pack) (alone in a day)
2. Pizza ( a box of leftover Domino's in my fridge will NOT make it through the night)
3. TGIF Spinach & Artichoke Dip (in your grocer's freezer) & Tortilla chips
4. Anything Mexican
5. French Fries

My five

1. Escargo. I know people picture gross snails, but if you've ever had them, you'll know what I mean. And if you haven't, they taste just like a nice clam or scallop but they are drenched in butter, garlic and parsley and are to die for.
We tried them when we went to Paris (because, come on, the food is half the reason you go to France, you gotta try it) and ended up we getting them every night. We just couldn't get enough.

2. Warm, moist, chewy, chocolate chip cookies straight out of the oven and just the slightest bit undercooked, so they don't harden to a crisp when they cool off. Served with ice cold 2% milk.

3. French Onion soup with tons of melted cheese served in one of those sourdough bread bowls.

4. Three words....Bacon. Wrapped. Scallops. Then again anything wrapped in bacon is mouth-watering.

5. But the food I will travel any lengths to get would have to be the fish and chips at Walker's Restaurant near where my grandparents used to live in Yorkshire, England. The batter is crisp and not too floury. The chips aren't those skinny little wussy fries, but real thick, chipped potatoes. A little salt, lemon, and malt vinegar and ...sigh. If that were my last meal, I would die a very happy woman.

My runner up: everything Italian. If I get a chance to go to Europe again, that's where I'm going.

There seem to be more salty people than sweet...interesting.
1. Cheese & crackers (preference is Epoisses and Vinta crackers, but White American and Ritz will do just fine too)
2. Chips and Salsa
3. Camaraos Victoria (Brazilian dish of shrimp, coconut type curry, mashed yucca flour)from Galletos in Westlake Village CA
4. Bluenami Burger at Islands
5. Shoestring French Fries dipped in Dijon Mustard

should have been Haagan Dazs...

FIVE. Difficult, but I'll give it a shot...

1. Fried green tomato's
2. Hagan Dazs: Black Raspberry Chip, which I can't find anymore! or Coffee
3. Deep dark chocolate with a bit of a bite--not too sweet
4. Chicken and Dumplings
5. Pecan waffles with real maple syrup

And runners up--blueberry muffins from a local bakery that are TO. DIE. FOR. A nice Cabernet Savignon, Filet Mignon (medium-rare), Pinto beans and cornbread, any and all pasta, homemade bread, cheese, glorious cheese, good REAL freshly-brewed sweet tea (and no, sweet and low is NOT the same), spring water, Nutella and a spoon, She-crab soup, broiled flounder stuffed with crabmeat, hazelnut florentines, chopped BBQ with sweet brown molasses sauce, and my Grandma Ruby's chocolate pie.

(so much for 5...)

In no particular order:

Pringles with Cheese & Onion (which they discontinued while I was pregnant - grrr)

Nick n' Willy's Outback Pizza

That concludes my thoughts on the perfect fat kid delight.

Not making a list. Just standing next to you in the almond croissant line.

And because I'm such a huge fan, I'll even tell you how to order them in Switzerland: "Mandelgipfel"

Yum.

But did you ever make it to the ATM?

Two words: Cheez-its. Or maybe that's one word. Either way.

In-N-Out Cheeseburger Animal Style (extra animal)
Gin and Tonic
Brie en Croute
Bacon
Merlot

1. Shrimp cocktail
2. Chocolate lava cake (those mini-Bundt cakes with the chocolate center that oozes out when you fork into it), served warm with melting vanilla ice cream. Chili's makes a good one.
3. Penne pasta with vodka cream sauce and Italian sausage.
4. Seafood enchiladas(must be made correctly - NO chopped carrots in the red sauce! I mean, WTF?)
5. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

I believe that eating a good meal can elevate a person to a higher euphoric plane, so I never feel too guilty, unless it's really crappy fast food or something. I love food so much.

Cracked up at the Not in Naperville comment!!!! I am dying to read through all of these comments, but Mr. Manic and I are doing that Seven Day sex challenge that Pastor in Texas has put forth and I'll be damned if I am gonna go against God's will on that one. My only problem is I almost had to call the church to ask him what his definition of sex is -- Does Bill Clinton's definition count?

Tonight is Day Six, and Mr. Manic is my KRYPTONITE!

Logan Square?

To all my crap-craving friends,
I've just heard that Lean Cuisine has recalled 800 000 of their "chicken meals" (yes, I use the term loosely) because there may be pieces of plastic in them.

Am I the only one who feels vindicated by this announcement?

OMG you girls are after my own heart!

Goldfish cracker pretzels w/ sliced cojack and an icy cold Diet Pepsi

Caramel corn (Garrett's in Chicago of course)

Frozen Reeses cups

Chipotle guacamole

Hot Tamale's Candy luv me ma' cinnamon

Just five?! That's as crappy as Discover Card calling today with a fraud alert. They got it fast! I *heart* Discover today!

One - Strong, Dark, Black Coffee - not too hot
Two - Husband's Green Chile Stew
Three - Sweetened condensed milk - spooned out of the can and into my air hole.
Four - Pecans and macadamias
Five - Blue cheese on, with, mixed into...anything

1.Food
2.Food
3.Food
4.I so DO NOT have a problem
5.....well maybe a little one

Anything deep fried, sweet, italian, spicey, mexican, chineese(the kind at the mall that doesnt use peanut oils, stupid later in life nut allergy). Yea I think that covers it.

Tanya,
NOT FUNNY. That's like saying pretend you have diabetes or pretend you have MS. Its a serious auto immune deficiency that can affect your entire life. It's not just that we can't eat bread as so many people think.
Sorry but it struck a nerve.

Hi Jen-These foods are like Kriptonite to me(!):

1.Orange chocolate-from Platters in Buffalo, NY if you are lucky!

2.Hot apple pie or hot apple dumpling w/vanilla ice cream

3. Vanilla Frozen custard from Anderson's (also only found in Buffalo, NY!)

Boce's pizza (yes, you guessed, only in Buffalo)!

We know how to eat here and it shows!
(Also, the Guatamalan coffee from Starbucks smells oh so sweet on a cold winter's day!)

1) boneless buffalo wings (HOT) with tonssss of bleu cheese dressing for dipping
2) vodka
3) garlic toast dipped in ranch
4) ANY pasta, preferrably with a thick creamy sauce and shrimp
5) butter pecan ice cream

You can pretend you have celiac disease. I do and now have no food Kryptonite as all the old ones make me deathly ill.

My new food Kryptonite mostly consists of wine and liquor now.

1. Crazy Wings from George's in Waco, TX (white meat chicken stuffed with cheese and a jalapeno, wrapped in bacon and deep fried... with a side of ranch of course!)

2. Prime Sandwich from Gristmill in Gruene, TX (tender marinated chunks of meat, sliced cheddar cheese with tomato, lettuce and 'prime' sauce on a massively large hunk of freshly baked sourdough bread)

3. Chips w/Guacamole from Filiberto's in Phoenix, AZ (deep fried tortilla chips covered in fresh guacamole and thinly shredded cheddar cheese... add their salsa for extra zing!)

4. Pollo Fundido from Valle Luna in Phoenix, AZ (tender marinated chunks of white meat chicken, covered in cheddar and cream cheese surrounded by a tortilla then deep fried and covered in queso)

5. 7-layer dessert bars (the ones with graham cracker crust, chocolate chips, caramel, coconut and 3 other ingredients I apparently dont care about)

I agree 100% with Susan below: Oakmont Bakery is by far, the best bakery on the planet [or at least in the U.S.]

The Oakmonter is the most delicious cake ever--
-layer of cheesecake
-layer of that really thick gooey chocolate bakery icing
-layer of chocolate cake
-all covered with chocolate buttercream frosting.

You kind of go into a sugar coma afterward, but it's worth it.

1. Iced Caramel Macchiato
2. Girl Scout Cookies
3. Fettucini Alfredo (the good stuff...made with heavy cream)
4. Jalopenos (random, I know)
5. Sour Apple Martini

oh.mah.gah. am going into a food coma just reading all of this.

my five?

1. hot wings. (football game optional).
2. super soft, warm, gooey, amazing chocolate chip cookies.
3. my mom's taco dip stuff. sounds weird, but it's to DIE for.
4. pretty much anything desert related that can be purchased at the cheesecake factory.
5. mango margaritas. <333

1. Baked Brie
2. 7 layer bean dip
3. Anything that involves feta cheese
4. Mashed potatoes
5. Sourdough french bread dipped in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic and crushed red peppers.

... and if I could add a number 6, I'd have to add mashed potatoes again. Because really... YUM!

Okay, first let me say, Not THAT Patricia.
Anyway, the food talk is cool, but what struck me was "tipping the movers". Oh, Man!!!!??? I just had some GORGEOUS new furniture delivered today. I left my cheating husband and old furniture, moved into an awesome new townhome on a golf course on the side of a mountain overlooking a quaint town in East PA, and am in the process of decorating, with the nice consolation prize I was awarded in divorce court. I cannot tell you how happy I am right now, after months of tears, wine, and therapy, and the furniture came, and I thanked the nice men very graciously, and sent them on their merry way. TIP!!!????
I did not know! I swear! I am a flight attendant, and I tip everybody, but I DID NOT KNOW!!!!! Now I feel like a total turd. And it reminds me of when I used to stay at my BFF'S apt. in NYC and I discovered the drawer with all of the delivery menus.
And they all said FREE Delivery.
So, being as how I was such a country mouse, I never tipped the guys. And being as how they were too polite to cuss me out, or maybe they did, but I did not, and do not, understand Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, or Mexican, I never knew what a faux pas (I do understand French), I was committing.
Not until the night that my BFF stayed at the apt. with me (normally she was at her boyfriend's house), and we ordered delivery and she asked me if I had any cash for a tip, and I said "What?, A tip? It says Free Delivery!?"
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I can't believe they even came back over and over again.
And now the furniture delivery guys? I mean, okay, but I already paid $75.00 for delivery. I am sorry guys. I really am. I did not know. And now your children will probably not get anything for Christmas. I am a turd.

1. Tanqueray and tonic
2. Steamed Shrimp with lemon butter sauce
3. Fried Tomatoes (Green or Red)
4. Chips (any kind) and Dip (the more sour cream and/or cream cheese the better)
5. Popcorn with lots of butter

LOL....basically anything that taste good is bad for you.

By the way....Did you ever make it to the bank?

Somebody's Buffalo Dip
Is absolutely addicting- the teens in my life eat it with a spoon....
4-6 pieces cooked chicken, no skin, shredded and put in 9x13 baking dish.
Top with 1 bottle (12 or 16 oz) Franks Louisiana Hot Sauce
In a sauce pan, melt 1 brick Cream Cheese with 1 bottle (12? 16? oz) Ranch Dressing).
Pour melted mix over chicken and sauce.
Top with a brick of shredded cheese- cheddar, jack, or a mix.
Cover with foil and bake at 400 for 45 minutes. Take foil off the last 5 or so minutes to crisp up the cheese topping if you like (we do).
Let sit 15 minutes before digging in.
Serve with heavy duty chips or celery stalks.
My thanks to whomever developed this one- I got it from a friend who got it from a friend, etc. etc., on the Internet.

The Ryan's Deviled Eggs recipe sounds delicious. I have to try them this weekend. I guess I should add deviled eggs to my kryptonite list. Yummmmm!!!!

I am starving and should not have read this before lunch.

Right now the top 5 I am craving are:
1. Gooey Butter Cake
2. Mashed potatoes
3. Any thing from Come Back Inn in Louisville, KY (Best Italian food in KY)
4.My Mom's Beef Stroganoff
5.Beer cheese and soft pretzels

My kryptonite food is definitely Rama with Tofu from Cozy Noodles on Addison and Sheffield. Although right in the heart of Wrigleyville craziness, they have the perfect amount of peanut butter in the peanut sauce. Mmmmm I'm drooling thinking about it now.

Second to that would have to be Clark Dog cheese friends and Philly's Best cheesesteaks on belmont by the red line.

I really think they must be putting crack in their food at these three establishments because I find myself eating all there of them at least once a week.

Entenmann's Pecan Ring
Italian Cream Cake
Any kind of Danish Pastry
Oh and did I say I am gluten intolerant.
One can only dream.

Frozen cookie dough. It's not so much that I can't stop eating it, it's more I have to KEEP eating it. Once I break open a tube and eat some there is really not enough left to make cookies so I figure the best thing for all involved is to finish it off. That's the polite thing, anyway.

Nutella. Right out of the jar.

1. nachos
2. wine (i know it's not a food but i've been known to opt for wine over food)
3. 7 layer dessert bars
4. freshly baked bread with dipping oil
5. anything when i'm hungry :)

Only 5?

1 - Scallion pancakes
2 - Ropa Vieja (La Cocina, Fairfield NJ)
3 - Guacamole (Jose Tejas or Badands)
4 - Chocolate
5 - Deviled Eggs

Ryan's Deviled Eggs
12 Extra Large Eggs
½ C Mayo
¼ Sour Cream
1 T Dijon mustard
1 T Horseradish sauce
½ lb Bacon*, cooked and crumbled
4 scallions, finely chopped

Mash yolks, stir in Mayo thru horseradish. Stir in bacon and scallions.

*A pound of bacon works even better!
**Make extra if you're taking them somewhere. A lot get eaten in the car on the ride over.

PS Oakmont Bakery ~ small, privately owned ~ the absolute BEST in Pennsylvania!!

My expanding waistline is proof of this ~
1. A good old fashioned, real Italian, spaghetti and meatballs dinner (fresh bread and all!)
2. Pork, sauerkraut & mashed potatoes
3. Chocolate raspberry truffle cake
4. Steak (medium) with bleu cheese or gargonzola cheese crumbled on top
5. Pumpkin pie with whipped cream

And for extra measure ~ back to old fashioned chocolate chip cookies dunked in ice cold milk!!

--Home made mashed potatoes with no gravy but tons of butter
--PIE PIE PIE
--Double chocolate brownie ice cream
--BK double cheesburger when the cheese is so hot that it oozes all over the wrapper
--Raspberry cake (you know the kind that you put raspberries on the bottom, then mix vanilla cake mix with only 3/4 can of Dt Dr Pepper berries and cream pop and put that on top, bake, mix some pop into low fat cool whip, frost with that and top with more raspberries-- wouldn't be a bad thing to eat if I didn't eat the whole pan in one sitting)
