My last two posts have been unintentionally serious, so it's time to lighten things up around here.
My friend Shayla tagged me with a Thirty Random Songs on Your iPod note. Normally I don't do these but A) it's Shayla who's asking and B) there's so much unpleasant stuff I need to accomplish around here (e.g. clean the basement, starting by picking up all Maisy's 100 soup bones because the floor looks like an archaeological dig site and, also, the cats are protesting something - the loss of pineapple maybe? - and have taken to pooping in the general vicinity of the box rather than inside) that I sort of can't resist.
Plus, at the end you guys can participate. Everyone wins.
Here goes...
New Order/Bizarre Love Triangle - This song makes me happy because every time I hear it, I'm suddenly twenty years old in the middle of a crowded basement at a fraternity party, trying to dance while also attempting to keep my plastic cup of keg beer from sloshing onto my pristine Keds.
Avril Lavigne/Girlfriend - Huh. I didn't expect SHAME to show up so quickly on this list. I have no excuse for this song being here except that it's great to run to on the treadmill. (Possibly because subconsciously my brain wants to move my body away from it?)
Andrea Bocelli/Time to Say Goodbye - This played at the end of The Sopranos on a Sunday night and I thought it was the most beautiful song I ever heard. The first thing that Monday morning, I was at my desk at the dot com ripping it from Napster. The idiot Joshes mocked me at first, but by mid-afternoon, I could hear each one of them playing it at their own desks. They all started the songs at different times, so it was like the Italian version of Row, Row, Row Your Boat every time I walked to the printer.
The Escape Club/Wild, Wild West - More college dance music, but I particularly loved this one because it referenced Ronald Reagan having nuclear arms. Don't forget, the Berlin wall was up and we were still cold warriors at the time. This song gave me great comfort knowing we had superior American fire power. (I'm pretty sure this isn't the reaction The Escape Club anticipated.)
Guns 'N Roses/Sweet Child O Mine- When this song came out, I didn't care for GNR, ironic because not only were some of the guys from my college town, but my boss was married to Izzy's brother. So I could have actually hung out with the band when they were home, but I thought they were "icky" and I was holding out for George Michael. Yeah, that worked out nicely for me.
The Cure/Just Like Heaven - I carried this cassette in my purse for months when it was released. So anytime I was around a jam box, I'd insist on playing it over and over and over. I'm sure that couldn't have been annoying.
Crowded House/Don't Dream It's Over - We listened to this tape on a continuous loop one day when a bunch of my fraternity friends and I were participating in a philanthropic endeavor, riding a go-kart from Lafayette to Indianapolis. Somehow I never had to take my turn pedaling, opting instead for the warmth of the pace car.
Beastie Boys/Fight for Your Right - This one didn't do anything for me until a couple of my guy work friends at the insurance company played it all afternoon in anticipation of the concert that night. The next day they came back complaining about having been the only people there over the age of 15. And that's just funny.
The B-52s/Rock Lobster - This song is the only reason the 4:30 aerobics class at Purdue's Co-Rec was bearable, largely due to choreography involving gatoring.
Ice Cube/It Was a Good Day - You know what's more gangsta than an insurance company service rep driving to appointments in her Dodge Stratus listening to Ice Cube with the windows open? Nothing, that's what.
Guns 'N Roses/Live and Let Die - The winter before Such a Pretty Fat came out I wanted to change the title of the book because I didn't like it. Originally, it was supposed to be Pretty Fat but we found out that this phrase linked to a fat fetish site and I was all, "People are going to think those women are me!" I wanted to call the book Live and Let Diet but it was too late. I'm not quite sure how the song and the book title are related but I began to associate them in my head, hence its presence on my playlist. (Hey, I can't swing for the fences with every story.)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones/The Impression that I Get - Dear Paul Rudd, the only reason Fletch didn't dump me when I dragged him to see you in Clueless back in 1995 is because the Bosstones were in the film, too. You might not have had anything to do with the decision to cast them, but if you did, thanks!
The Police/Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - A little anorexic girl with ridiculous implants sang this song so badly on American Idol a few weeks ago that it's erased all the nice memories of this music. Whore.
Biz Markie/Just a Friend- My BFF Joanna and I roadtripped to Virginia Beach for senior week when she was about to graduate and we sang this loudly and badly at least 400 times during the course of the trip. Now my reaction is pretty much Pavlovian and I can't hear it without singing along, loudly and badly. (P.S. I miss using "roadtrip" as a verb.)
* * *
So... huh.
This list only contains fourteen songs.
You know what? With a playlist like this, thirty is probably sixteen too many.
Anyway, consider yourselves tagged if you want to do this on your blog, or you can give me your five-song condensed version in the comments.
Play on.

1. Down on the Farm/Tim McGraw. It's just a good time song to make you smile.
2. American Woman/Lenny Kravitz. Good workout music.
3. You Can do it/Ice Cube. Good to listen to at gym or cleaning house. I just like stuff that makes me want to move.
4. It Ain't me Babe/Bob Dylan. I like the oldie music & Bob Dylan does it 2nd best (second only to Simon & Garfunkel.)
5. What Goes Around/Justin Timberlake. Good angry music or gym music when you need to focus.

Dear Paul Rudd,
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Sailing" by Christopher Cross
What? It's a very relaxing song.
"Watch Me" by Lorrie Morgan
This song is an oldie, from my country days with the ex-husband. But it's actually a pretty fitting song for this time in my life.
"Voulez Vous" by Abba
Okay, I can only explain this with these two words: Mamma Mia
"The River" by Garth Brooks
Again, country song from back in the day. But it has a good message. And if you saw Garth live (which I know at least one of you did!) I think you'll feel the same, it was the best concert I've ever seen in my life. (Sorry Olivia. You know I love you.)
"As If" by Sara Evans
At this point in my life, when this one comes on, I skip it. It's a good enough song, but it's too lovey dovey, and going on about how she's gonna "act as if" everything is perfect in her relationship, even though she's fairly certain it's not. And I refuse. Once upon a time, I loved this song. Which explains a lot.
"The Water is Wide" by Amy Sky and Olivia Newton-John
Honestly, this is by far not my favorite Olivia song. If I'm paying attention, I skip this one too.
"The Light in Your Eyes" by LeAnn Rimes
Another oldie. From when LeAnn was what? Thirteen? Like she knew so much about life at that point? But I like the song.
"Don't Cha" by the Pussy Cat Dolls
Okay, okay, okay, this is probably the most embarassing one (that came up anyway!) on there. But there's something about how self-confident and brazen it is. I love working out to this song.
"Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" by Don Henly and Patty Smith
I'm letting you in on a little secret (since it's just us). This one came on yesterday while I was mudding and taping part of my basement. And I bawled. Hysterically. Sometimes love ain't enough, and sometimes a song is exactly enough.
"Never Far Away" by Olivia Newton-John and Richard Marx
Again, not my favorite by Olivia. At all. With all the awesome Olivia songs on my Ipod, (How many? 91) I cannot believe that these two songs are the only ones that came up. I'm rather disappointed in this ending to my list.

Better Get to Livin' - Dolly Parton: Yes ma'am. I intend to.
Knockin' on Heaven's Door - GNR: Hay, haay, hay hay yeaaahh.
Levon - Elton John: I love it when he says, "And JESUS!! He WAAANTS to go to Venus."
Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show - Neil Diamond: Look for my Neil Diamond musical to hit the stage within the next 2 years.
I'll Fly Away - Jars of Clay: Oh glory.
Another Summer - Roman Candle: This is a great band, if you've never heard them before.
Jump (For My Love) - Pointer Sisters: I used to jump rope to this back when I was on a competitive jump rope team. That's right. A competitive jump rope team.
Morning Glory - Oasis: When I hear this, I am suddenly 16 and on my way to soccer camp.
Didn't We Almost Have It All - Whitney Houston: How can you not love this?
Never Say Goodbye - Bon Jovi: Sigh.

I don't have an I-pod, but the five random songs that came up on my computer playlist are:
Friends Don't Let Friends Dial Drunk- Plain White T's
Oh, Sheila- Ready For The World
Standing Outside The Fire- Garth Brooks
Save A Prayer- Duran Duran
Let It Rock- Kevin Rudolf
That's actually a tame assortment- believe me, they can (and do) get weirder!

So I read Pretty Fat first and glad I did. Bitter was a tough read for many reasons but it was a great reality check. I still laughed so hard I cried at times and on an even lighter note, I seriously want to bitch slap Courtney, that back stabbing, cheating, lying piece of shit. Sorry, but I'm stuck on that part and I hope that life came back to bite her in the fattest part of her ass, the bitch. There, now with that said, I'm on to read Bright Lights, which my best friend assures me is the funniest one yet as she left mascara tear stains on the gyno visit pages. Can't wait to read it!:)
p.s. We think ur funny and always like to comment, if someone doesn't think ur funny, they're on the wrong web site. U Rock Jen!

Just like Heaven is my ring tone. And by the end of the day, even I'm annoyed. I guess you can only have so much of a good thing. Who knew? Although I do believe it's an improvement over Blister in the sun, which was my last ring tone. You know it's time to move on when your 6 year old is belting out "big hands I know you're the one" over, and over, and over...

David Gray/This Year’s Love – All time favorite song. No matter how many times I listen to it, it never gets old.
The Postal Service/Nothing Better – Memories of kissing cute indie boys with glasses. The song is pretty damn fantastic. I urge anyone to listen to it that hasn’t heard it before.
Journey/Faithfully – Nothing says karaoke night without some good ol’ Journey tunes. I may have never laughed as hard as I did when reading about the “Steeeve Perry!” slug game.
*NSYNC/Tearin’ Up My Heart – I was that crazy teenage girl who waited in line for concert tickets, made homemade posters and knew endless trivia about Justin Timberlake. In case anyone is curious his middle name is Randall. His favorite color is baby blue and his favorite cereal is Apple Jacks. :)
Whitney Houston/I Wanna Dance With Somebody – The first tape cassette I ever received. It’s the only thing I told anyone I wanted for my birthday when I was four years-old. My older sister still talks about how I tortured her with playing that song over and over at the highest volume my boom box would allow.

1. Boston by Augustana. Probablly one of my most favorite songs in exsistence. It chills me to the core that someone wants to leave california for mass....
2. crushcrushcrush by paramore. If you don't like this song, it's a lie. We all love radio rock from xm Disney.
3. Suga on my tongue by Trick Daddy
for when I'm feeling naughty.
4. Fall Into Me by Emerson Drive. Because they are the only band to let me heckle them, sexually, verbally and mentally harass them, without consequence or reprecussion. Very enjoyable all around.
5. Why can't this be love? Van Halen......
Why can't it?

Polygraph, Right Now by The Spill Canvas - Nothing better than a love gone wrong song.

...And I didn't even need to use my AK. Today was a good day.---I have been known to sing that from the depths of my cubicle. My co-workers find it particularly hilarious since I will not walk to the metro by myself for fear of creepy homeless people.
Here goes-
Collide by Howie Day. It is my wedding song. My Fiance used to listen to it when we first got together and think of me. I tease him that Howie Day made him think of me...
Brick House- Commodores. Nothing gets the party started like a song objectifying women.
Is this Love- Bob Marley. This song plays over and over any time I go on vacation to the beach. Just hearing it makes me feel as if I am enjoying a frosty beverage in the sun.
Livin' On a Prayer- Bon Jovi. Frshman year 1986. Good times. Impossible to listen to and not sing at full volume. Not appropriate for the office.
Hot Child- Nick Glitter. As heard in the Sex in The City episode where Carrie dates a mam's boy. Just makes me feel happy. And really, isn't that what music is supposed to do?
Posted by: Erin | March 06, 2009 at 01:32 PM
You should TOTALLY roadtrip to Virginia Beach again!! The city has really done a nice job cleaning itself up and building a better atmosphere. I'd let you sing any song as loudly as you want :)

Coming late to this party myself, but my list can be read here:

Maybe its a little late for this, but....
At Last-- Etta James.... this song is a CLASSIC! Its a wonderful and inspiring love song. It fills my heart with the hope that maybe someday I can say those words. But now, everytime I listen to it, I think of Etta James getting all diva on Barack Obama for having Beyonce sing it at his inauguration instead of her. Personally, I would have gone for the original over the pop tart Beyonce. Anyway....
Norah Jones Wish I Could (what's up with the jazz? Two in a row? Swear this is on shuffle!) I love the simple guitar strumming, and the harmonizing on this song. This takes me back to a year ago, right after the end of my engagement. My former fiance didn't have a replacement girl like this song has, but I would find myself avoiding the places I went with him for awhile while I tried to heal from the heartbreak of it all.
OneRepublic- Angel of Mercy- Once again, end of my engagement. I didn't have anyone, though, pick me up and help me fall in love again. Rather, God gave me friends that were my balm of Gilead. These were the people I could call in random moment of shock and sorrow, and just cry. I think you all know who you are. Thank you.
This Love by Maroon 5- Reminds me of watching a funny Buble/Groban skit where they imitated one another's style of music. Also, a reminder not to get into a ridiculous love affair like my high school romance where it just drug out, and was nothing but games. Never again. Plus, I love the groove on this song. It makes me bounce in my work chair and mouth "oh, oh, oh... oooooooh woaaaaaah...."
Sarah Brightman and Jose Cure- There For Me (another love song?) Um, another song with my former fiance. He used to sing this to me alot. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy. One time, I found a Youtube with Josh Groban singing Cure's part in English with Sarah Brightman. You should go hear it.
Michael Buble- Can't Help Falling In Love- (this mournful love song pattern is getting RIDICULOUS) Remind me of the guy I dated before my before my former fiance. We just kept trying to have the relationship going cause neither one of us is the type that gives up easily. And we were close. But it wasn't really meant to be. Plus, this song has some sweet clarinet action on it.
You Don't Know Me- Ben Folds feat Regina Spektor- Um, this reminds me of a recent situation with a recent gentleman that assumed I was going to see him when I was back in Iowa at Christmas and kindly asked me not to visit. I kindly replied to him I had absoltuely no plans to do such a thing, and that it would be stupid of me to even think of it given the circumstances of our friendship. With as much time as I spent with this person, it felt as if they went against all their knowledge of me to make this assumption. I broke the acquaintance.
It's A Beautiful Day- U2- I love this song! Its a reminder on a bad day to just seize the moment and to rejoice! It's a beautiful day. Don't let it get awaaaay.... I used to listen to it every morning as a sophomore in high school while getting ready for school. I have been a U2 addict for years.
That will do for now. I think eight is enough, yes?
Posted by: Emily | March 06, 2009 at 10:31 AM
1) The River of Dreams - Billy Joel oldie but goodie
2) Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam can't resist a good guitar
3) You Ain't Much Fun - Toby Keith love me some country boys!
4) Raised Up Family - James Taylor my all time favorite singer/songwriter
5) Jenny From the Block - Jennifer Lopez - fun bubblegum pop needed now and then
6) How Sweet it is - Michael Buble - mmmmmm
7) Dirrrty - Christina Aguilera - fab song for the treadmill
8) Famous in a Small Town - Miranda Lambert - she's just too cute!
9) Thank Goodness - Wicked Soundtrack - how did that get in there? What a great show!
10) Hate That I Love You - Rihanna - wow. makes me wonder if she feels that way about Chris Brown right now!

I just filled one of these out on my Facebook, it must be circulating everywhere :)
I'm sitting here in our room at the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells where my husband and 3 kids are fast asleep. I devoured your book this evening (Bitter is the New Black) once everyone fell asleep and just couldn't put it down. Fabulous Fabulous....and yikes...maybe even reminds me a bit of myself at times.
Great read and awesome blog, off to read more posts!
Posted by: Michelle | March 06, 2009 at 01:03 AM
Love the posts, Jen! I'm just a year younger than you so all of your songs brought back great memories of crowded frat parties and fun times with my sorority gals.
My Ipod's at the office so I'll hit party shuffle on my iTunes:
Just Like Heaven - The Cure (another fave from college days!)
Girls and Boys - Blur (great song for hitting the treadmill)
Candy Shop - 50 Cent (another good workout tune)
Einstein on the Beach - Counting Crows (love the Crows and was hooked from the first time I heard this)
A Little Respect - Erasure
Thanks for keeping me laughing; can't wait for the new book and look forward to seeing you on tour in DC!
PS - Jen, I'm also a huge fan of Bocelli! I married an Italian guy whose family loves opera and when he played "Time to Say Goodbye" for me for the first time, I thought it was so beautiful that we had it played at our wedding (when we gave roses to our moms). Glad someone else has heard the song and loves it!

PS. Also, he's neutered.

I don't have a playlist, but I'll tell you what's more gangsta than your insurance agent... a nine pound white poodle named Edward wearing a pastel blue and green argyle sweater, and a swarovski crystal encrusted dog tag (his "bling"), holding off a pack of rez dogs while the Husky, the pit bull and the Jack Russell (his "homies") hunker down behind him for protection. His name is Edward, but his gangsta knickname is Mall Cop.

Just remembered something I thought you'd enjoy (and this is kind of on topic):
I ran into an acquaintance who was picking her kid up from school early to get a head-start on her 14th birthday. The present? A night out at a local club just outside L.A. to see... Dokken.
Yeah. Like that.
Rock on.

Jen: You crack me up. I'm just a couple years younger than you, but I can relate to most of these songs.
I wonder what it is about a certain age (usually high school? right?) that the songs/bands you listen to become the ones you carry for the rest of your life?
I won't list my iPod songs because, er, I don't have one (there are three in my house, so I borrow everyone else's), but I do have a writing play list on my iTunes. It's all, shamefully, U2 right now.
(That's only shameful because there is SO MUCH music out there, but I'm hitting theirs hard for inspiration.)
Sorry to hijack the comments. Keep the posts coming, and congrats on the additional two-book deal!

re: Mighty Mighty Bosstones
When I lived on Martha's Vineyard for a summer, my landlord was the dad of the saxophonist of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The room I rented was his old bedroom, and I had his old bed. So, I kind of like to say that I spent a summer in the bed of one of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
That is all.

That seems so fun... but I don't have an Ipod. Or and MP3... or more than one CD in my car. And I am guessing that just naming the songs on the radio as they are played just isn't the same.
